History of the FSC-1

  • Why a Flying Car?
  • Why not an airplane that drives?
  • Or even a Vertical Take-Off and Landing Vehicle?

The FSC-1 vehicle did not come about overnight. It evolved over a number of years through several design iterations. This search included VTOL, Roadable Aircraft and finally Flying Car designs.

LaBiche Aerospace Marketing Evaluation

After years of investigating various designs for technical merits, the breakthrough came when we asked a couple of key questions.

"OK. Some pretty smart people have built cars in the past that could fly, but they didn't sell. So, what kind of vehicle do customers want to buy?"

LaBiche Aerospace launched an extensive marketing and questionnaire evaluation over several years. From this evaluation, it was determined that as a car based society, potential owners would really prefer to drive everywhere possible… if they could only "magically" shorten the travel time!

Here is a brief look at some of the more interesting findings:

  • The appearance in ground mode is extremely important.
  • Ground performance is as important to them as the flying performance.
  • Automatic conversion from aircraft to ground mode is highly desirable.
  • 95.7% of the final destinations potential owners wanted to go to is ONLY available by driving.
  • 85% of the time the vehicle would be used as a car.
  • Average Trip distance was 555 miles.
  • Average Trip would include 2 destinations.
  • 76% of respondents are married or have multiple family members in the household (significant other, children, etc.)
  • 73% said the number one obstacle in purchasing an aircraft was the relative "lack of utility" it would provide for the family and they would not be able to justify it to themselves, spouse, or significant other.
  • 81% own a (high) performance car.
  • 55% said they wanted a vehicle with at least 4 seats.
  • Minimum flying speeds 3 times faster than the average driving speed.

From this information the basic requirements for the FSC-1 were set and work was started to find a solution.
